The No. 13 University of Arizona softball team (40-10, 14-7 in Big 12) will play its final series of the regular season against the University of Houston beginning from Friday, May 2 through May 4 at Cougar Softball Stadium in Houston, Texas.
In the rankings, Arizona remained at No. 13 this week continuing their dominance as the Wildcats have not dropped out of the top fifteen. This will be the last ranking before the postseason.
Pitcher Devyn Netz was once again named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. Her second honors this season.
Arizona remains second in the conference with a record of 14-7. Close behind them is Iowa State University with a record of 13-8.
Houston is currently placed at the bottom of the Big 12 with a 4-15 conference record and a 22-21 total record. The Cougars’ current total home record is 14-10 while their home record against conference teams is 2-7. The Cougars are 2-8 in their last 10 games.
The Cougars’ most impressive performance of the year is their series win against Iowa State coming back from an extra inning loss in game one to stealing away both games two and three of the series.
The Wildcats have faced the Cougars three times back in 2016. One game played on April 8 and a doubleheader played on April 9. Arizona swept this series winning game 2 in the 5th inning from an 11-4 final score.
Houston’s best in-conference team statistic is their performance at the plate holding the seventh best batting average in the conference of .287. This can likely come from their two stars freshman pitcher and infielder, Brooke Hall, along with sophomore outfielder, Jordee Wilkins
Based off of conference statistics, Hall stands out with an impressive batting average of .359. She matches the batting average of both Miranda Stoddard and Netz. She’s the fourth best in on-base percentage
Behind her is Wilkins with a batting average of .350 and the eighth best individual on-base percentage of .480. Wilkins also has the second most triples of any player in the Big 12.
Freshman catcher, Isabela Cintron, has the best fielding record in the conference sharing a 1.000 stat line with Brigham Young University’s Bre Townsend and Arizona’s own Netz.
