The University of Arizona soccer team will face GCU for a home matchup on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium. This will mark the Wildcats’ eighth game of the season.
History vs. GCU
The Wildcats hold a 2-1-1 record over the Lopes. Their most recent matchup was in September 2024, which resulted in a 1-0 win for the Wildcats. Their only loss against GCU was back in 2022, a 1-0 defeat. With a home field advantage, Arizona is favored to come away from the matchup with a win.
GCU players to watch
The Lopes are led by Chris Cissell who is in his sixth season with GCU. Prior to this season, Cissell accumulated 60 wins, only four shy from the program record of 64. He’s led the team to a 4-2 standing so far this season, projecting a successful season.
Tatum Hofstetter, a sophomore midfielder, currently leads the Lopes with 2 goals and one assist. While posing a threat offensively, out of Hofstetter’s 11 shots on goal, only three have been on target. If Hofstetter is able to find the net against Arizona, she could be dangerous for the Wildcats’ defense.
Junior midfielder Madison Hamm leads GCU with two assists, a key playmaker for the team this season. Despite not having any goals, Hamm has secured one shot on goal which found the frame. Out of the Lopes’ six games, Hamm has started all, a valuable component of the team.
Wildcats to watch
Fourth-season head coach Becca Moros leads Arizona. As a prior player with a history of success, Moros is a proficient coach with knowledge capable of taking the team far into the season.
Senior defensemen Maia Brown has been a staple for Arizona’s back line this season. Brown has made crucial tackles in high-intensity moments throughout the season. Against teams like Stanford University, Brown was a key player in holding a solid defensive line despite Stanford’s many offensive pursuits.
In the offensive third, sophomore forward Jessica Bedolla consistently remains a threat against opponents. With 2 goals this season, Bedolla is tied with three other Wildcats for most goals. She’s taken a total of five shots, four of which fell on frame. Despite her starting in just three games, she continues to make an impact on the field.
