The University of Arizona triathlon team finished first place in their first ever home meet. The meet, appropriately named “Duel in the Desert” was a duel meet between Arizona and ASU, with Arizona scoring 60 points and ASU following closely behind with 54 points.
Race Recap
Kelly Lyn Wetteland, a senior from Maryville, Tennessee, showed her experience and fortitude by winning the race in a time of 29:43.76. This race continued her undefeated season, extending it to three straight wins. Margareta Vrablova, a sophomore from Slovakia, followed closely behind Kelly with a time of 29:59.30. Wrapping up the top three UA athletes is Ellison Wolfe, a sophomore from Columbia, Pennsylvania, who finished fifth overall with a time of 30:14.57.
Arizona showed remarkable depth against ASU, with six women finishing in the top 10, and all seven athletes finishing in the top 12. The depth shown by Arizona can not be understated, as the Wildcats look to use this momentum to work towards becoming back-to-back National Champions.
Looking ahead
The triathlon team will race the NCAA West National Qualifier in Fort Worth, Texas, next month on Sunday, Oct. 26.
