The University of Arizona football team (4-1, 1-1 in Big 12) crushed Oklahoma State University 41-13 on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Arizona Stadium. The Wildcats won their first conference game of the year and have gotten back in the win column.
Junior quarterback Noah Fifita threw for 376 yards and 5 touchdowns on 28 completions for 38 attempts.
“You saw that redline show up because our effort was 100-100. You saw us be really really aggressive that way and play really hard,” head coach Brent Brennan said.
Offense
The Wildcats’ offense came out firing from kickoff. On the first drive of the game, Fifita led Arizona down the field, connecting with redshirt sophomore wide receiver Tre Spivey for a 13-yard passing touchdown in the back of the end zone. This led the Wildcats to an early 7-0 lead.
Later in the opening quarter, Fifita found Spivey again in the end zone for the second touchdown of the game, extending Arizona’s advantage to 14-3.
Arizona kept its foot on the gas in the second quarter. Redshirt senior transfer wide receiver Luke Wysong scored his first touchdown as a Wildcat after running for 47 yards and pushed the lead to a three-score game.
More of the same continued in the second half after the Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and put the game officially out of reach for the Cowboys.
Defense
The Wildcats’ defense made a statement against the Cowboys’ offense allowing just two field goals and forcing four turnovers.
To start the third, redshirt junior Jay’Vion Cole intercepted a pass from OSU quarterback Zane Flores at midfield.
Late in the third quarter, OSU running back Rodney Fields Jr. fumbled the football and was recovered by redshirt senior defensive lineman Tre Smith.
Arizona’s defense forced OSU to punt seven times and turn the ball over on downs twice.
Looking ahead
Arizona will look to keep its winning ways and host No. 23 BYU next week on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 5 p.m. at Arizona Stadium. The game will also be streamed on ESPN2.
