The University of Arizona volleyball team (11-8, 5-4 in Big 12) looks to bounce back from its rivalry loss against No. 6 ASU as they travel to face Texas Tech University on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas. The Wildcats will try to hold their eighth place standing in the Big 12 while the Red Raiders will aim to build momentum after snapping their eight-match losing streak against the University of Central Florida.
History vs. Texas Tech
History vs. Texas Tech Arizona and Texas Tech’s volleyball history dates back to 1978, with the Wildcats holding complete dominance in the series. The two programs have met eight times, with Arizona remaining undefeated against the Red Raiders. The only exception came in their first-ever meeting in 1978, which ended in a 1-1 tie in San Diego. Their most recent matchup was during the 2024 season, where the Wildcats defeated Texas Tech 3-1 on the Red Raiders’ home court.
Texas Tech this season
The Red Raiders enter this week’s match with a 9-12 overall record. They recently snapped an eight-match skid with a win over the University of Central Florida on Saturday, Oct. 25. That skid significantly hurt their Big 12 standing, leaving them tied for last place with the University of Houston at 1-8 in conference play.
During that rough stretch, Texas Tech managed to take more than one set from an opponent only once; against the University of Colorado Boulder. In their other conference matches, they’ve won just a single set or been swept entirely. Fortunately for the Red Raiders, they’ll remain at home for this matchup, hosting Arizona in the United Supermarkets Arena.
Leading the way for Texas Tech this season are several standout players. Sophomore Addie Kanouff from Colorado leads the team with 185 kills. Texas native and graduate student Peyton Dunn has tallied 460 assists so far. Sierra Grizzle, a junior from Idaho, leads the team in digs, with 391, as well as service aces, with 23.
Arizona this season
The Wildcats head into Wednesday’s contest with an 11-8 overall record and a 5-4 mark in Big 12 play, putting them in a tie for seventh place with BYU. Arizona will face the Cougars again later this season on Nov. 5 and Nov. 19.
Most recently, the Wildcats faced in-state rival ASU, who currently sit atop the Big 12 standings and are ranked No. 6 nationally. Despite the 3-1 loss, Arizona stayed competitive throughout the match, keeping each set close. The Wildcats will have an opportunity for redemption when they meet ASU again on Nov. 13 in Tempe.
As has been the case all season, Jordan Wilson and Carlie Cisneros continue to be the driving forces for the Wildcats’ offense, consistently ranking among the team’s leaders in kills and overall impact. Wilson has tallied 310 kills pairing with Cisneros who has 211. Defensively, Brenna Ginder remains on top with 235 digs.
