The University of Arizona volleyball team (14-9, 8-5 in Big 12) took a home court victory 3-1 against Texas Tech University (25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17) on Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. in McKale Center, which marked their eighth conference victory. The Wildcats made their comeback after previously losing to Texas Tech earlier this season.
Standout players
Carlie Cisneros led the Wildcats offensively with 18 kills. Sophomore Adrianna Bridges followed, accumulating 12 kills. Freshman Paige Thies trailed with 10. Journey Tucker, Avery Scoggins and Bridges were essential to defense, with Tucker and Bridges collecting six blocks and Scoggins getting four. Notably, Scoggins led the match with 44 assists.
Set one
The Red Raiders came in hot with an ace to get the first points on the board. Bridges tied it up 2-2 with a strong kill. The Wildcats began to pull away 5-3 after an ace from Haven Wray but Texas Tech caught up 6-6 after a kill by freshman Kenna McKenzie. After going point-for-point throughout the beginning of the set, Renee Jones pulled the Wildcats ahead by 2 points with an Arizona roof. Arizona built a healthy 17-11 lead on Texas Tech with a kill from Tucker. Thies served an Arizona ace to bring the Wildcats up by 8 points.
Scoggins served an ace to take the first set with an 11 point lead, Arizona winning 25-14.
Set two
Texas Tech gained a 3 point lead on the Wildcats with Peyton Dunn’s second ace of the match. Their lead did not last long as the Wildcats tied it up 4-4 with a dump over the net from Bridges. The Red Raiders went on a 3 point scoring run that ended with a serve into the net from Katelyn Cochran. The Wildcats caught up 17-16 to Texas Tech after an ace from Brenna Ginder and a kill from Cisneros. A long rally ended with an Arizona roof from Cisneros, immediately followed by an Arizona ace served by Scoggins.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats were never able to get ahead of the Red Raiders. Texas Tech took the second set 25-20.
Set three
The third set started off with an intense rally that ended with a kill from Texas Tech’s Reagan Engler. Ana Heath got the first points on the board for the Wildcats with a roof. Throughout the beginning of the set, the teams were going point-for-point, but Arizona quickly began to pull away 8-5 after the Wildcats had a 4 point scoring run. Bridges tipped it over the net to extend Arizona’s lead 11-7. The Wildcats showed strong offense with blocks by Tucker and Scoggins that gave them a 5 point advantage over the Red Raiders. Sydnie Vanek spiked the ball over the net to get Arizona to the set point 24-19.
Texas Tech closed the gap towards the end of the third set, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Wildcats. An Arizona roof from Vanek gave the Wildcats the win 25-23.
Set four
Like the previous sets, Texas Tech put the first 2 points on the board for the fourth set. A tip over the net from Cisneros put the Wildcats in the lead 5-4. Arizona went on a 6 point scoring run, creating a 5 point lead over Texas Tech after an ace served by Wray. Texas Tech was unable to recover and catch up to the Wildcats. A kill from Bridges started another 4 point scoring run for Arizona that gave the Wildcats the set.
Arizona defended their home court from Texas Tech and took the fourth 25-17. The Wildcats won the match 3-1.
Looking forward
The Wildcats are heading up to Tempe to take on their rival ASU on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Desert Financial Arena.
