The University of Arizona volleyball team (11-9, 5-5 in Big 12) suffered a devastating 3-0 loss (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) against Texas Tech University on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 4 p.m. in the United Supermarkets Arena. This marks the Wildcats’ third consecutive loss.
Standout players
Senior Jordan Wilson led the match with 14 kills, followed by Adrianna Bridges and Carlie Cisneros who both collected 4 for Arizona. Wilson, Brenna Ginder and Avery Scoggins each served an ace for Arizona. Scoggins also was essential in the offense with 32 assists.
Set 1
Texas Tech came in hot with an ace from sophomore Peyton Dunn. The Red Raiders quickly created a healthy gap from the Wildcats, but a kill from Cisneros shortened the gap 8-5. Kallista Jioshvili Ravva gave Texas Tech their second ace of the set, 10-5. The Wildcats got possession after a kill from Ana Heath, but Texas went on a 4-point scoring run, building a 10-point gap over Arizona.
The Wildcats were ultimately not able to catch up. Texas Tech won the first set 25-14.
Set 2
Texas Tech began the second set with a 7-point scoring run before the Wildcats were able to get any points on the board. A kill from Sydnie Vanek got Arizona their first point of the set, 7-1. It took the Wildcats a while to find their footing, but they were able to get 2 kills on the board from Wilson. Arizona went on a 4-point scoring run with a kill from Wilson and an ace from Scoggins, the first of the match for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats were able to get closer to the Red Raiders this set, but it wasn’t close enough. Texas Tech took the second set 25-18 after an ace served by Dunn.
Set 3
Wilson got the first points for the third set after a kill that was assisted by Scoggins. After kills from Vanek and Journey Tucker, the Wildcats shortened the gap 8-6. Junior Sierra Grizzle served two back-to-back aces for Texas Tech. Shortly after, Ginder served an ace for Arizona. Texas Tech held a consistent 5-point lead on the Wildcats until the end of the set, when Arizona had a 5-point scoring run that shortened the gap 24-23.
As the previous set, Arizona’s comeback was too late. Texas Tech won set three and the match with a clean sweep.
Looking ahead
Arizona volleyball will return home to take on No. 13 TCU as the Wildcats host Volleyween this Friday, Oct. 31, at 6 p.m. in McKale Center. Fans are encouraged to wear costumes, the game will also be streamed on ESPN+.
