Sophia Akimi Troetel and Josiah Patrick Santos were killed. Troetel was the general manager at KAMP Student Radio. Santos was involved in multiple campus groups in the performing arts.
Two people were killed and another was injured Thursday night in a hit-and-run near the University of Arizona campus.
A road closure UAlert was sent to students on Thursday at 11:09 p.m. for the intersection of Second Street and Euclid Avenue. The intersection remained closed for multiple hours throughout the night.
Katya Castillo-Mendoza was critically injured. Her family decided to take her off life support tonight according to the Arizona Daily Star.
Castillo-Mendoza was studying finance and real estate development at the UA.
Troetel was pursuing a double major in psychology and Spanish, and Santos was studying Japanese language and theater arts, according to the U of A.
A GoFundMe campaign was set up by Santos’ mother, Mathia. As of Saturday night, the campaign had raised nearly $24,000.
The suspect Louis John Artal, 19, was arrested and appeared in court on Friday on two counts of second-degree murder, a charge of aggravated assault with serious injury and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
it was found that Artal consumed alcohol 30 minutes before the crash occurred.
Multiple sources say Artal was known for speeding in his Porsche around the surrounding campus area.
Artal turned himself in an hour after the incident on the advice of his father according to Artal’s attorney.
Artal’s bail was set at $250,000. He currently sits in Pima County Jail.
