The University of Arizona volleyball team (12-9, 6-5 in Big 12) will face No. 17 BYU this Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. in McKale Center. BYU and Arizona both currently hold a 6-5 record in their conference seasons. Both teams are coming off of clean sweep victories and they hope to keep their momentum going coming into this match.
History vs. BYU
BYU and Arizona first met Oct. 7, 1977 in Provo, Utah where the Cougars won in three sets. Since then, the teams have played 29 times. Over the years, Arizona has taken 13 wins and 16 losses against BYU. It’s been a year since the teams met and the Cougars took a clean sweep victory on their home court.
BYU this season
The Cougars are coming into this game after a 3-0 win against Kansas State University. Suliane Davis totalled the highest number of kills at 12 while hitting .250, followed by Claire Little Chambers with 11 kills hitting .293.
This season, BYU welcomed four freshmen and two transfer players to their team. BYU’s freshman recruiting class included opposite hitter Anna Blamires, outside hitter Davis, setter Grace Fredrick and libero Kaylee Tingey. They also welcomed transfer libero Emma Barbero from Washington State University and middle blocker Elena Wallace from Tennessee Tech University.
Arizona this season
On Oct. 31, the Wildcats took a clean sweep victory at home against TCU after losing three consecutive games. This was only the third time TCU and Arizona met and the first time Arizona won.
Throughout the game, senior Jordan Wilson led offense with 14 kills, followed by Adrianna Bridges who tallied 11 kills, the highest in her career for a match. Sophomore Carlie Cisneros served 3-of-6 aces for the Wildcats. Defense was led by junior Journey Tucker and freshman Renee Jones. Tucker had six blocks and Jones followed with five blocks.
