After a 3-1 win over BYU earlier this season, the University of Arizona volleyball team (14-10, 8-6 in Big 12) will face BYU (18-8, 6-8 in Big 12) for the second time on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in Provo, Utah.
History vs. BYU
The last time the two teams met was earlier this month, Nov. 5, where they competed on the Wildcats’ home court. Arizona won 3-1, making this upcoming matchup the Cougars’ chance to seek redemption. With just under 2 weeks between games, it will be interesting to see if the Cougars made the necessary changes in their game strategy to beat the Wildcats this time around on their home court.
BYU this season
The Cougars are currently on a three-game losing streak after falling short in a 2-3 loss to the University of Utah last Friday, Nov. 14, in Salt Lake City. Ranked No. 10 in Big 12 standings, the Cougars are currently behind the University of Central Florida.
Suli Davis and Claire Little Chambers are dominating the offensive leaderboard for the Cougars in kills, Davis with 438 and Chambers with 356 this season. They have also been standing out defensively for the Cougars with digs, each having 198. Other defensive standout players for the Cougars are Lulu Uluave with 230 digs, Alex Bower with 209 and Emma Barbero with 215.
Arizona this season
Arizona is also coming into this game off a loss to rival ASU, suffering a 1-3 defeat in Tempe. The Wildcats will have a solid 5 days in between games to strategize before getting back on the road to enter Cougar territory.
It’s no surprise that star player Jordan Wilson continues to run the leaderboard in kills. Wilson, an extremely strong component of Arizona’s offense, has tallied 379 kills this season in addition to her 205 digs and 23 service aces.
Carlie Cisneros continues to stay on the leaderboard as well with 259 kills, falling one place under Wilson. Cisneros has 224 digs for the season and is tied with Wilson in the service ace category with 23. Avery Scoggins, another standout player for Arizona, has been putting in the work on defense, accumulating 238 digs and absolutely controlling the assists category with 916. The next player to fall under Scoggins in the assist category is Brenna Ginder with 88.
With only three games left for the Wildcats after BYU, Arizona fans hope to see them come out on top and carry this momentum for the remainder of the season.
