The Arizona women’s volleyball team (14-11, 8-7 in Big 12) remains on the road in Utah as they prepare to match up against the University of Utah. The teams will face each other on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
History vs. Utah
Utah and Arizona have a long history, as they first met back in 1977, where the Utes won in five sets. This is the second time this season that the teams have faced each other. Arizona beat the Utes 3-2 (23-25, 25-12, 17-25, 26-24, 15-13) back on Oct. 2, on its home court.
In the game, Jordan Wilson paved the way for the Wildcats, gathering 17 kills hitting .178, followed by Carlie Cisneros, who got 11 hitting .111. There were 3 aces throughout the match served by Adrianna Bridges, Brenna Ginder and Cisneros.
The frontrunners for the Utes were sophomore Neea-Maria Joki and freshman Devyn Wiest who both totaled 16 kills, Kamryn Gibadlo was shortly behind totaling 14 for Utah. The Utes had more aces than the Wildcats, getting six total for the match.
Utah this season
The Utes are currently sitting at 13-13 overall, 10-5 in their conference season. More recently, they had a huge upset where they beat Kansas State University in a clean sweep victory. They also beat BYU in five sets a few days prior. This match against Arizona will wrap up their home games for this season.
Senior middle blocker Emrie Moea’i leads the Utes this season with the highest amount of kills at 268. In the recent match against BYU on Nov. 14, she reached a season best with 18 kills. She also tallied a total of 14 points, 13 kills and two blocks against Kansas State.
Arizona this season
This is the Wildcats last away game in a three game series before they return home to finish their season with their final two games. Arizona is coming into this match after two consecutive losses against ASU and BYU.
This season’s offense has been led by Wilson and Avery Scoggins. Wilson has tallied the highest number of kills at 400. Scoggins leads with the highest amount of assists and aces at 964 assists and 27 aces.
The leading defense for Arizona has been Ginder and Bridges. So far, Ginder has collected 317 digs and Bridges totalled 77 blocks. They have been essential to the team’s defensive strategies.
