The University of Arizona women’s volleyball team (16-12, 10-8 in Big 12) won in a clean sweep victory (25-16, 25-22, 25-12) against West Virginia University on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 6 p.m. in McKale Center. This was the Wildcats’ comeback game after losing three consecutive matches on the road.
Standout players
Senior Jordan Wilson led the Wildcats on offense with 13 kills and 1 ace followed by Ana Heath who tallied 7 kills. Carlie Cisneros totalled the highest number of aces for the match, serving 2. Leading defense was Adrianna Bridges, getting six blocks.
Set three
West Virginia opened the set with the first 3 kills on the board. Arizona quickly took the lead from them, going on a 6-point scoring run ending with an ace from Cisneros. Bridges served the second Arizona ace of the evening, doubling the Wildcats’ lead over the Mountaineers. An Arizona roof by Bridges pulled the Wildcats ahead by 6 points. Cisneros served her second ace, third of the match, to make it 17-10 for Arizona. Wilson came in hot, giving the Wildcats 2 kills during a 3-point scoring run. The Mountaineers hung on throughout the beginning of the set, but the Wildcats gained a large advantage that West Virginia could not close.
The Wildcats dominated the first set, winning 25-16.
Set two
Renee Jones and Bridges got the first points on the board for the Wildcats with an Arizona roof. West Virginia’s Trinity Sheridan slammed the ball over the net, bringing the Mountaineers closer to Arizona 4-2. West Virginia tied up the match 6-6 after a kill from Sheridan. They then pulled away 8-6, after an ace from Sheridan and a kill from Laila Ibrahim. A long rally was ended by a kill from Heath, closing the gap 13-10. Journey Tucker dumped it straight over the net, closing a rally with a 5 point lead for the Wildcats. A 3-point scoring run tied up the match 21-21 after an ace from Eily Painter. An ace from Avery Scoggins brought the Wildcats to set point.
After falling behind in the beginning of the set, the Wildcats changed their momentum and made a comeback in the second half. Arizona took the second set 25-22.
Set three
The third set went back-and-forth until the Wildcats started to pull away after two consecutive kills from Tucker, followed by a kill from Wilson. West Virginia came back to tie it up 5-5 with back-to-back aces from Sheridan. Arizona proceeded to go on a 7-point scoring run, gaining a 7-point advantage. A strong kill from Bridges extended the Wildcats lead 15-6. Arizona got ahead early into the set and continued to grow their lead.
The Wildcats won the third set 25-12, winning the match in a clean sweep.
Looking ahead
The Wildcats will be closing out their season at home with their Senior Day game against the University of Cincinnati. The teams match up on Friday, Nov. 28, at 3 p.m. in McKale Center. Arizona fans can stream this game at home on ESPN+.
