The University of Arizona women’s basketball team will host the University of New Mexico on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. in McKale Center. The Wildcats look to move back into the winning column after earning their first loss of the season against Southern University.
History vs. New Mexico
The first meeting between the Wildcats and the Lobos was back in 1973, where Arizona won 73-36. In total, the programs have competed against each other 24 times; the Wildcats dominating with a 15-9 record over New Mexico. Their last matchup was on Dec. 4, 2022, in New Mexico. Arizona won by 17 points, 77-60.
Lobos to Watch
New Mexico is led by Destinee Hooks, a 5-foot-9 junior guard. Hooks is currently averaging 15.9 points per game. She shoots 44.1% from the field and 32.6% from beyond the arc. Although Hooks only averages 4.4 rebounds per game, she makes up for this by having contributed 14 assists and 10 steals on the season.
As a team, New Mexico shoots 42.9% from within the arc and 33.2% from 3-point range. The Lobos have struggled from the foul line so far this season, completing just 68.8% of their free throws.
Wildcats to Watch
The Wildcats are led by 5-foot-7 guard Mickayla Perdue, a graduate student transfer from Springfield, Ohio. On her previous team, Cleveland State University, Perdue averaged 20 points per game, 3.3 assists per game and was named the Horizon League Player of the Year. She also earned First Team All-Horizon League honors.
This season, Perdue has picked up right where she left off. She leads the team by averaging 17.6 points per game on 48.3% shooting. Additionally, Perdue is 30.6% from 3-point range this season.
