The University of Arizona women’s basketball team (6-2) will return to McKale Center on Wednesday, Dec. 10, aiming to end their two-game losing streak as they host Eastern Kentucky University (7-1).
The Wildcats started the season strong, winning their first six games. However, Arizona has recently faltered, dropping two consecutive matchups. The most recent loss came from a close contest against the University of New Mexico where Arizona fell, 72-69.
The team struggled with turnovers and late-game execution, which proved costly. In particular, the defeat against Southern University saw Arizona commit 24 turnovers, a major factor in the loss.
Arizona head coach Becky Burke expressed her frustration with the recent performances, specifically noting how turnovers disrupted the team’s momentum.
“We’re on a two-game losing streak right now. Point, blank, period,” Burke said. “We are practicing tomorrow like we are desperate. If we practice any other way tomorrow than we just don’t understand what every game means to this team.”
Addressing these mistakes will be crucial for the Wildcats if they hope to rebound.
Arizona this season
Graduate guard Mickayla Perdue remains a pivotal force in the Wildcats’ offense alongside graduate guard Noelani Cornfield, who will continue her role as a facilitator, helping keep Arizona in the game.
Defensive improvement and ball security are recognized by the team as essential areas to address in order to get back on track.
Eastern Kentucky this season
Eastern Kentucky arrives in Tucson riding a five-game winning streak. The Colonels showcase a balanced offensive attack, highlighted by prolific perimeter shooting. As a high-volume shooting team, they attempt over 26 three-pointers per game and convert at a rate of 35.8%, ranking them among the top 50 nationally.
Defensive focus and rebounding
Arizona’s defense, particularly rebounding, will be tested by Eastern Kentucky’s size and shooting ability. The Wildcats’ guard-heavy lineup has struggled to control the boards in recent outings as this aspect will be especially important against a Colonels team featuring several forwards over 6-feet tall. Arizona must emphasize boxing out and aggressive rebounding, while also minimizing turnovers, if the Wildcats hope to secure a victory and build momentum heading into conference play.
