The University of Arizona women’s basketball team closed out its non-conference schedule, winning 105-59 over Bellarmine University on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 6 p.m. in McKale Center.
This performance was an absolute blowout by the Wildcats, as they scored over 100 points for the first time since the 2023-2024 season. Arizona had their foot on the gas from start to finish of this game, scoring nearly twice as much as the Knights.
The Wildcats were led by redshirt junior Tanyuel Welch, who scored 18 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forward Blessing Adebanjo added a career-high 11 rebounds to the box score. Arizona also showed outstanding roster depth by having six players score in double digits including Noelani Cornfield (15 points), Daniah Trammell (13 points), Mireia Jurado (10 points), Kamryn Kitchen (12 points) and Achol Magot (10 points). The bench played a major role in this game, combining for 41 total points.
The Wildcats started off strong in the first quarter, tapping into a 12-point lead entering the second quarter. By half, the lead was up to 28 points with a score of 55-27.
By the end of the third quarter, Arizona was leading 82-46, a margin of 36 points. The Wildcats continued to dominate late into the fourth quarter, winning by 46 points with a final score of 105-59.
The Wildcat offense was outstanding, as a team shooting 56.4% from the field. However, Arizona also showed relentless defense by having 31 points solely off turnovers. The Wildcats played with incredible pace and tempo which led to 36 points off fast breaks.
All-in-all, in these nonconference games Arizona has shown immense toughness and resilience. The Wildcats have had a great season so far, with an impressive record of 9-2. They will now begin conference play with their first game being against the University of Utah on Dec. 22, at noon in McKale Center.
