The University of Arizona women’s basketball team (9‑3) suffered a close defeat against the University of Utah Utes (10‑3), falling 63–62 on Monday, Dec. 22 in McKale Center. Despite a determined late-game rally, Arizona ultimately came up one point short as Utah’s defense held strong in the final moments.
Game highlights and key players
Utah’s standout scorer Lani White set the tone early, pouring in 20 points in the first half and finishing with a game-high 26. White displayed her versatility, knocking down 3-of-6 3-point attempts and consistently attacking the basket in both transition and half-court. The Utes’ front court, led by Chyra Evans and Reese Ross, proved to be a physical force, combining for 20 points and 22 rebounds, including six offensive boards that gave Utah valuable second-chance opportunities.
Arizona showcased all their different scoring options, with four starters reaching double figures. Senior transfer guard Mickayla Perdue led the Wildcats with 16 points and capped an 11–2 scoring run with a quick corner 3-pointer, cutting Utah’s lead to just one with under ten seconds left. Noelani Cornfield contributed a double-double, filling the stat sheet with 11 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds.
First half
The Wildcats started strong, holding a narrow lead after the opening quarter by leveraging their experienced guards to create turnovers and ignite the fast break. However, a rough start to the second quarter allowed Utah to surge ahead, building a 29–19 advantage within minutes. White was instrumental during this stretch, applying pressure in transition and setting up easy opportunities for her teammates.
Utah forward Ross bolstered the Utes’ interior presence, cleaning the glass and earning trips to the foul line. Utah outscored Arizona 24–4 in the second quarter, heading into halftime with a 39–23 lead behind White’s scoring prowess and the team’s rugged defense.
Second half
Arizona head coach Becky Burke leaned on her veterans to chip away at the 16-point deficit after the break. Tanyuel Welch collected a 3-pointer early in the third quarter which trimmed the deficit down to single digits for the Wildcats.
The third quarter became a defensive battle, with Arizona registering multiple rim stops including two blocks from Daniah Trammell and another from Blessing Adebanjo. Offensively, Nora Francois and Perdue helped keep the Wildcats close, as they trailed 53–43 entering the fourth quarter.
Arizona’s momentum continued into the final period, fueled by consecutive defensive stops which gradually put more pressure on the Utes. The Wildcats’ defense forced several turnovers, leading to three free throws and Perdue’s clutch corner 3-pointer that cut Utah’s lead to just one. Ultimately, Utah’s defense held firm in the closing seconds, overcoming missed free throws and securing a narrow victory in McKale Center.
Looking ahead
Arizona now turns its attention to a tough road matchup at Colorado. After a strong second‑half push against Utah, the Wildcats will look to carry that defensive intensity and cleaner execution into Boulder.
