The University of Arizona gymnastics team opened its season at home with a victory against the University of Washington on Friday, Jan. 9. Arizona scored 195.425, beating Washington who scored 194.650.
The Gymcats also debuted their Midnight Pearl leotard for their first meet of the season.
Vault
The meet began with vault, where the Gymcats totaled 48.85. Ainsley Greever was first up and won the event with a 9.825. Following Greever, Sophie Derr and Elizabeth LaRusso both scored 9.775s. Abigayle Martin came in recording a 9.75 and rounding out the event was Jessa Janicke with a 9.725.
Uneven bars
Up next was the uneven bars, where Arizona secured a 48.675 with Aubrey Krohnfeldt as the top scorer and winner with a 9.85. She was followed by Martin who scored a 9.775. Freshman Hillary Puleo made her collegiate debut scoring a 9.725. Ending on bars was Derr with a 9.70.
Balance beam
The Gymcats moved onto the balance beam where they posted a 48.65. Martin was the top scorer for the Gymcats on beam with a 9.85 followed by Gianna Lenczner with a 9.80. Tirzah Wise finished it up with a 9.75.
Floor
Finishing up the meet on floor, the Gymcats recorded 49.25. Emma Strom recorded her career high with 9.925 followed by Puleo making her floor debut while scoring 9.90. Derr and Martin both collected 9.85s. Last up was Krohnfeldt who added 9.725 to the Gymcats’ score.
Looking forward
The Gymcats will be traveling to Texas to compete in a tri-meet with Texas Woman’s University and the University of Denver on Friday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. MST.
