The University of Arizona gymnastics team came up just short against BYU on Friday, Jan. 30 scoring a 195.250 as the Cougars claimed a 196.300 victory.
The Wildcats stayed competitive throughout the meet but were unable to close the gap in the final rotations. Arizona was led by Abigayle Martin, who recorded a 39.325 in the all-around and delivered strong performances across multiple events.
Vault
Arizona opened the meet on vault with a 48.650. Jessa Janicke led the Wildcats with a 9.825, while Martin added a 9.775 to steady the opening rotation.
Uneven bars
On uneven bars, Arizona posted a 49.025. Martin and Sophie Derr each scored 9.800, while Hillary Puleo added a 9.775, as the Wildcats remained within striking distance at the midpoint of the meet.
Beam
Arizona followed with a 48.750 on the balance beam. Martin paced the rotation with a 9.900, while Aubrey Krohnfeldt contributed a 9.750, as Arizona headed into the final rotation.
Floor exercise
The Wildcats closed the meet on floor exercise, scoring a 48.825. Martin led the lineup with a 9.850, while Emma Strom posted a 9.925 to highlight the rotation as Arizona finished the night strong.
Looking forward
Arizona returns to action on Feb. 6 against the University of Utah. The Wildcats continue their early season non-conference schedule at home.
