The University of Arizona women’s basketball team extended their losing streak (10-11, 1-9 in Big 12) with a 88-69 loss to Oklahoma State University on Sunday, Feb. 1 in McKale Center. This is the sixth consecutive loss for the Wildcats leaving the team with more losses this season than wins.
Key players
The leading scorer for the Wildcats was junior guard Sumayah Sugapong who ended the night with 25 points, two steals and one assist. Following Sugapong was fifth year center Nora Francois who recorded 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. She helped throughout the game with rebounding and efficiency .
For Oklahoma State, the leading scorers were senior guard Micah Gray and junior guard Stailee Heard who both tallied 23 points. They both had a great night from the 3-point line with combined 8-for-14 shooting when they were shooting.
First half
The Wildcats started the game off strong scoring 13 points and gaining a 5 point lead halfway through the quarter bringing them up 13-8. This lead didn’t last long as Oklahoma State went on a 13-5 run bringing them up 21-18 heading into the second quarter.
Throughout the second quarter, everything went the way of Oklahoma State which left things looking bleak for the Wildcats. Oklahoma State’s defense limited the Wildcats to only score 12 points in the quarter while also forcing four turnovers. The Cowgirls extended their lead to 16 points as they headed into half time 46-30.
Second half
The third quarter only saw things get worse for the Wildcats as Oklahoma’s lead grew to 22 points. The Wildcats outscored the Cowgirls in the third as they had seven turnovers collecting second chance points. The fourth quarter was all of the same, as it saw the Wildcats fall with the final score of 88-69.
Looking forward
The Wildcats look to break their losing streak going into their second home game this week against Kansas State on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m. This game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
