The University of Arizona men’s basketball team (22-0, 9-0 in Big 12) returns home to take on Oklahoma State University (16-6, 4-5 in Big 12) on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. The Wildcats have officially broken the program record for the best start going 22-0.
This game commemorates the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest Arizona teams in history, the 2001 Final Four team. Members of that team will be in attendance on Saturday and will be recognized at halftime.
History versus Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State and Arizona first met back in December 1993 in Phoenix, where the Wildcats won 97-84. The teams have met three other times since, with Arizona winning each time. Saturday marks the first time Oklahoma State has played in McKale Center as every other game was either in Oklahoma or a neutral venue.
Arizona this season
The Wildcats’ top scorer is Brayden Burries who has 337 points and 36 3-pointers so far this season. Following Burries is Koa Peat who trails close behind with 325 points. Both freshmen have been essential to the team’s success this season.
Burries was recently added to the Jerry West Award midseason watch list. This award features the top 20 collegiate shooting guards in the nation. There hasn’t been an Arizona player who won the award, but many were nominated, including Caleb Love.
Burries was also named the Associated Press men’s college basketball player of the week.
Head coach Tommy Lloyd recently announced that Bryce James will officially be redshirting during his freshman year at Arizona. James has not played at all this season and it was expected he was redshirting.
“I have real strong belief that Bryce will be a contributor at Arizona in the near future. He’s shown a lot of progress, not only learning our system but just physically maturing,” Lloyd said to Big 12 Network.
Oklahoma State this season
Oklahoma State came off with a win against the University of Utah 81-69 on Jan. 31 and No. 7 BYU 99-92 on Feb. 4.
Senior guard Anthony Roy paved the way for Oklahoma State with 345 points averaging 18.2 per game. Roy has also recorded the most 3-pointers this season collecting 65 so far. He has a large gap on the Parsa Fallah who has collected the second highest with 277 points.
