Nancy Guthrie, the eighty-four-year-old mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie, a University of Arizona alum, has been reported missing since February 1.
KVOA News 4 Tucson reported that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department suspects she may have been kidnapped from her home in the Catalina Foothills. She was last seen at her home around 9:30 p.m. on January 31.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos informed in a press conference on Monday the urgency of the issue due to Guthrie’s medical conditions that require medication.
“This is an 80-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, is in need of medication. Medication that if she doesn’t have in 24 hours, it could be fatal. So we make a plea to anyone who knows anything about this,” said Nanos.
Guthrie’s doorbell camera was disconnected at about 1:45 a.m., and her pacemaker app was disconnected from her phone. Guthrie’s blood was found on the porch of her home, Nanos said.
Search and rescue teams, volunteers and border patrol K-9 units have all been involved in the search, Nanos said.
Nanos shared during the press conference that some things were noticed during investigation of the home that were concerning, stating that the case has shifted to a criminal investigation and raising suspicion that a crime occurred.
Working alongside the PCSD is the FBI. The special agent in charge, Jon Edwards, said agents are providing analytical and technical support by analyzing interviews, cell phones, obtaining cell phone tower information and providing support to PCSD, as reported by KVOA News 4 Tucson.
Guthrie has now been missing for over a week. NBC News reports that Nanos confirmed at a press conference on Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. that there are still no suspects in the case.
Multiple press outlets have received multiple ransom letters throughout the past week. KGUN received a note Feb. 3 demanding $6 million by Feb. 9 evening for Guthrie’s return. Authorities have not confirmed the legitimacy of the letter.
The disappearance of the UA alum’s mother has caught national attention and coverage. The White House said President Donald Trump spoke with Savannah Guthrie last week.
The Guthrie children posted a new video pleading for Guthrie’s return. “We will pay,” said Savannah Guthrie.
