The University of Arizona women’s basketball team (11-16, 2-14 in Big 12) lost its fifth consecutive game as they were defeated 74-60 by Baylor University (23-6, 12-4 in Big 12) on Saturday, Feb. 21.
Key players
The Wildcats were led by graduate student guard Noelani Cornfield and freshman forward Daniah Trammell who each collected 11 points. Cornfield managed to also get three rebounds and three assists while Trammell only had a rebound.
Baylor’s leader was sophomore guard Taliah Scott who led with 22 points as well as two rebounds and four assists.
First half
The first quarter remained close as the game was tied at 6-6 with just 6:41 remaining. The Wildcats went on a 16-9 run to end the quarter. Cornfield led all scorers with 6 points in the quarter, and it looked like Arizona was going to ruin the senior night for the Baylor players.
However the second quarter went a lot differently than the first. The Bears outscored the Wildcats 23-8, taking a 38-30 lead into the halftime break. Scott really got going in the quarter, putting up 10 points and going 5-of-5 from the free throw line. All it took was 10 minutes, and the bears were back in the fight.
Second half
The third quarter went a lot like the second, seeing the Bears stretch out the lead to 15 with a score of 58-43. The quarter saw Baylor hit jumper after jumper on the Wildcats, including two 3-point shots. The Bears looked to have the game in hand heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Wildcats outscore Baylor 17-16, but it wasn’t enough as they would eventually fall to the Bears 74-60. Scott put the sealing bow on the game, scoring 8 points in the quarter, including hitting two 3-pointers.
Looking forward
The Wildcats will return home to the McKale Center at ALKEME Arena for their senior night and final home game of the season to take on the University of Houston on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. The game is also available on ESPN+.
