The Arizona men’s baseball team (1-7) hosted the University of Connecticut (3-5) in a four-games series. They lost three of the four games at Hi Corbett Field. UConn secured the series victory with a commanding 11-2 win in Sunday’s finale, leaving Arizona searching for answers early in the season.
The series marked the first ever meeting between the Wildcats and the Huskies.
Game one
In the series opener, Arizona and UConn battled into extra innings. The game remained close through the ninth inning, but the Huskies pulled ahead in the 12th inning with key runs, handing Arizona a 6-4 loss and extending the Wildcats’ losing streak. Arizona rallied late in regulation but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Game two
In the second game of the series, Arizona’s offense struggled to gain traction and was held scoreless as UConn took the 4-0 victory. Strong pitching by the Huskies kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard, putting Arizona in an early 0-2 hole in the series.
Game three
Arizona finally broke through in the third matchup, staging a late rally to earn a 5-4 victory over UConn. The Wildcats scored multiple runs late in the game to edge the Huskies and snap their season-long winless stretch, giving Arizona something positive to take out of the series.
Game four
In the finale, UConn’s offense exploded for 11 runs, including a home run and several key RBI knocks on 12 hits. The Huskies jumped out early and never looked back, clinching the series with an 11-2 win and handing Arizona a tough defeat to close out the four-game set.
What’s Next?
The Wildcats will look to turn their season around by competing in this year’s Las Vegas Classic. This tournament will take place from Feb. 27 to March 1. They will take on the University of Oregon, Vanderbilt University and the University California, Irvine in the three games in Las Vegas. These games will be available to watch on D1Baseball.com.
