As students move away from midterms and towards finals, the University of Arizona Police Department’s reports from mid-March to early April showed a slight decrease in public masturbation but a sharp uptick in attacks on Subaru Foresters.
Machete-wielding SunLink passenger
In the early afternoon of March 16, a Sun Link Tucson Modern Streetcar driver flagged down UAPD officers, alerting them of a passenger who threatened another passenger with a machete. Officers found and detained the suspect and his girlfriend in the alley behind the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house.
According to police, the suspect was agitated and claimed to have thrown the machete in another direction after getting off the streetcar. Police were able to speak with the victim, who confirmed the man had held the machete at waist level and threatened them. After the man’s arrest, police searched his backpack and found the machete.
Attempted bike enclosure break in
On March 18, UAPD received a report of a roughly 5-foot-7 man with a thin build messing with the gate to the bicycle enclosure inside the Park Avenue Parking Garage. Upon police arrival, the suspect was gone, but the gate screen had a five-by-three inch hole.
Jeep rams parking garage gate arm
According to a report from Parking and Transportation Services, on March 18, a blue Jeep Wrangler drove up to the exit gate and paid, but the gate did not open. The driver then hit the gate arm with his car, stopped briefly and proceeded to leave the garage.
Toy gun drive-by
Around 7 p.m. on March 21, UAPD responded to an anonymous SafeCats report of a man shooting what the reporter described as either an airsoft, BB or Nerf gun out of a silver sedan driving near the Graham-Greenlee Residence Hall.
Police checked the area and security camera footage, but they could not find any cars or suspects matching the description.
Unwanted dorm guest
In the early morning of March 22, UAPD responded to a call of a highly intoxicated man entering several others’ rooms inside the Coronado Residence Hall. Through a wallet that the man had left behind and resident assistants’ confirmation, police identified the suspect as a UA student who lives in that hall. Police searched the area and the suspect’s room, but they were unable to find him.
Public masturbator evades arrest (again)
Around noon on March 22, UAPD responded to a woman’s report of a man masturbating, as he drove east on Second Street near Olive Road. She described the man’s car as a small grey sedan with a temporary license plate that had a black frame.
Police searched the area, but they could not locate the self-pleasurer.
Subrarus vandalized
On March 31, a UA student returned to her Subaru Forester in the Honors Village Garage and found someone had smashed the rear driver’s side window. She told police that nothing had been stolen from her car.
Just after 8 a.m. on April 2, the rear passenger side window of another Subaru Forester was smashed in the Highland Avenue Parking Garage. The owner of this car also told police that nothing was missing from his car. No suspects were found.
Attempted break-in
In the early morning of April 5, UAPD received a report of an attempted break-in at the ArtWorks A building the night before. The lock to the courtyard door had been picked, and the door frame was damaged.
DUI crash
Just after 11 p.m. on April 9, a passerby flagged down UAPD to assist a car crash at Broadway Boulevard and Highland Avenue. Police performed a field sobriety test on one of the drivers and reported signs of impairment. The driver in question had two young children in the car who were sitting on their mother’s lap.
The Tucson Police Department arrived on the scene soon after and determined that the group was involved in a reported assault in the midtown area.
Police pursue a rogue rider
On the night of April 9, UAPD officers tried to pull over a man riding an electric bicycle near the Student Recreation Center. The rider attempted to flee southbound, and officers followed him. He made it all the way to Broadway Boulevard before he crashed while trying to jump over a median with his bicycle.
Now dismounted, he took off running. The officers in pursuit soon caught up with him, and he was arrested on warrant. While searching him, police found fentanyl pills in his possession.
Scooter and bike thefts
From March 16 through April 9, nine bicycles and two electric scooters were reported stolen.
