The No. 20 University of Arizona softball team (34-13, 15-6 in Big 12) took a clean sweep victory in their weekend series against the University of Houston (20-31, 3-21 in Big 12). The last game of the series was senior day to celebrate all of the Wildcat graduates and all they have given to the program.
Game One
Arizona wasted no time setting the tone Friday night, overpowering Houston 9-1 in five innings at home behind a power surge and a dominant outing from Jalen Adams.
The Wildcats jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and never looked back. Addison Duke sparked the offense with a solo home run in the second before Sydney Stewart broke the game open, launching two home runs and driving in five runs. Tayler Biehl added a home run of her own as Arizona’s lineup pounded out 13 hits and scored in three different innings. Regan Shockey reached the base three times and scored three runs, keeping constant pressure on Houston’s pitching staff.
In the circle, Adams delivered another composed performance, throwing five innings and allowing just one run while striking out three. Houston’s only run came on a solo home run in the third, but Arizona responded immediately and continued to build separation. The Wildcats’ combination of early offense and steady pitching secured the run rule victory and gave them a strong start to the weekend series.
Game Two
Arizona controlled every phase Saturday afternoon, shutting down Houston in an 8-0 mercy rule win to clinch another decisive conference victory at home.
The Wildcats jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and never let Houston settle in. Arizona added three more in the third and another three in the fourth to create separation. Shockey continued her strong weekend with three hits and two runs scored, while Grace Jenkins delivered in key spots with three RBIs. Biehl chipped in two RBIs as Arizona capitalized on opportunities and forced Houston to play from behind all afternoon.
In the circle, Rylie Holder was dominant from the first pitch. The right hander tossed a five inning shutout, allowing just three hits while striking out five. Houston struggled to generate consistent offense and never mounted a serious threat. Arizona’s combination of disciplined pitching, clean defense, and timely hitting secured the run rule victory and kept the Wildcats rolling in Big 12 play.
Game Three
Arizona slammed the door on Houston Sunday afternoon, erupting for a 15-4 run rule victory at home to complete a statement weekend sweep.
The Wildcats wasted no time setting the tone, scoring five runs in the first inning and following it with five more in the second and five again in the third. By the end of the third inning, Arizona had built a commanding 15-2 lead and completely overwhelmed the Cougars on both sides of the ball. The lineup pounded out 14 hits and drove in 14 runs, applying constant pressure from the very first pitch and never letting Houston settle in.
Tele Jennings powered the offense, going three for four with five RBIs and a home run. Grace Jenkins delivered a monster performance as well, blasting two home runs and driving in five. Sydney Stewart added three RBIs and reached base four times, while Regan Shockey went a perfect three for three and scored three runs. Arizona went six for 14 with runners in scoring position and produced timely hit after timely hit in a relentless offensive display.
In the circle, Rylie Holder earned the win with three strong innings, allowing just two hits and keeping Houston scoreless during her outing. The Wildcats’ pitching staff stabilized the game after the opening frame and shut down any hopes of a comeback.
With the mercy rule victory, Arizona completed a dominant weekend sweep and continues to gain momentum heading into its final series of the season.
Looking forward
The Wildcats will travel to Salt Lake City to face the University of Utah starting Friday in a three game series to close out the regular season.
