U.S. News & World Report ranked the University Medical Center, with locations in Phoenix and Tucson, as one of the “best hospitals” in the nation Aug. 14. The honor puts the hospitals among prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital and over 4,500 others.
The UMC in both locations exceeded their potential in several fields of medicine such as geriatrics, where they ranked 19th, 43rd in cardiology and heart surgery, 31st in pulmonology, 32nd in nephrology and 50th in neurology and neurosurgery.
The UMC – Tucson was awarded No. 1 in the city and No. 3 in the state of Arizona.

“To be among the medical centers recognized in five specialty areas is a significant accomplishment,” said Guy Reed, dean of the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix. “[It] is a testament to the work that our team does every day in support of building the relationship between our college and Banner.”
However, UMC is not slowing its momentum yet. Reed said he and his colleagues aspire to continue raising the bar for the institution and its staff.
The purpose of the Best Hospitals Rankings is to guide patients to the hospitals where they will receive the best care for their condition or illness and to inform doctors how their hospital compares to others in the nation, according to the U.S. News & World Report website.
