    3 things to know today

    Beef may cause lower sperm count

    Women who eat beef regularly during pregnancy will have sons with sperm concentrations 24 percent lower than normal, according to a study released yesterday from Copenhagen University. Researchers believe the culprit could be “”gender-bender”” chemicals, used to stimulate growth in cattle, that act like human sex hormones.

    Tax day on the way

    April 17 will be Tax Day this year because April 15 falls on a Sunday and April 16 is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the District of Columbia. Students should have W-2 or 1099 forms with yearly total earnings ready before filing taxes. Most single and married students may use the 1040EZ tax return form, while some will need Form 1040 or 1040A. Forms can be found on the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov/formspubs.

    A new World Economic Forum survey that rates different countries’ abilities to use information technology to stay economically competitive saw the U.S. drop from No. 1 in 2006 to seventh place. America fell behind countries like Denmark, Sweden and Singapore.
