During their Nov. 16 meeting, the Associated Students of the University of Arizona discussed end of the semester events as well as projects that are underway for the end of the month.
There has been a new update to the ASUA website which has added more information on club advocacy issues. The new homepage will also add information on groups such as Campus Closet, SafeRide, Campus Pantry and feminist pharmacy.
Campus Pantry Benefit Dinner
Next year, on Feb. 3, 2023, the Campus Pantry will be hosting a basic needs benefit dinner. Their goal is to raise money for people in the UA community who are struggling with food insecurity. The goal is to bring 350 people to this event and it will include a silent auction in order to raise money for the pantry.
During the meeting, the senators voted on giving $3000 to this organization in order to purchase tables for the event which will allow some ASUA members to participate in this event.
Harassment Guidelines
One of the senators brought to the senate the issue of harassment that has been happening on campus just recently. They have been discussing with group members and even members of the Daily Wildcat in order to work together to create a resolution. Their aim is to create stricter guidelines and penalties for harassing students or faculty of the University of Arizona.
Recently, a member of the Daily Wildcat has been facing harassment from many individuals after an article that she wrote. She wrote this article about a social media figure and received a lot of backlash due to it, which resulted in the student being harassed. There still aren’t any set solutions but it is an issue that the senate will investigate in order to create a less toxic school environment.
Planning Budget Committee
President Patrick Robles presented to the strategic planning budget committee and gave a timeline of the work ASUA has been doing from August to October.
“I made sure to lay out all calls for action of administrators and positions of influence to support our efforts in creating a safer community … to ease the burden on students who struggle financially,” Robles said.
Robles had a meeting with the cultural resource centers on Nov. 28 to hear concerns about their office move to the Dean of Students.
“I want to hear firsthand what these concerns entail so that we can potentially advocate for the best solution possible,” Robles said.
