Stealing Home

The groundskeeper at Hillenbrand Stadium called the University of Arizona Police Department after an unknown thief tried to steal home plate.

The officer arrived at the stadium on Monday, March 26, at approximately 7:40 a.m., where he met with the groundskeeper.

According to the groundskeeper, someone must have snuck into the stadium sometime between the evening of Friday, March 23, and the morning of March 26. 

No one should have been on the field during that time, as the softball team was playing away games that weekend.

When he began his morning walk through the stadium at 6:30 a.m. that Monday morning, the groundskeeper noticed a pair of wire cutters laying next to home plate. He also saw that the dirt on the left side of the plate had been dug out.

The groundskeeper also said he had picked up the wire cutters before calling the authorities.

A check of the perimeter revealed no signs of forced entry.

The officer took photographs of home plate and the wire cutters and collected the cutters as evidence. He also checked the dirt surrounding home plate for footprints but found none.

The officer noticed two security cameras pointing at the field. The groundskeeper told him to contact the assistant director of event operations, as she would be able to review the footage for a possible suspect.

Someone’s been sleeping in my bed

A female Coconino resident found an unwelcome guest in her room in the form of a drunk male student passed out on her bed on March 25 at approximately 2 a.m.

Upon arrival, a UAPD officer contacted the Resident Assitant on duty. According to the RA, the female resident left to use the restroom, and when she returned there was an unknown male passed out on her bed. 

The officer attempted to wake the male. While doing so, the officer noted that he could smell intoxicants on the sleeping male. The officer retrieved the male’s driver’s license and confirmed that he was under 21 years of age.

Tucson Fire Department arrived to check the male’s vitals and escort him back to his own room in Coconino Hall.

The officer spoke with the female student who stated that she did not wish to press charges for trespassing nor did she feel she was in any danger. 

Later that same day around 10 p.m., the officer spoke with the male resident and read him his Miranda Rights.

He told the officer that he remembered drinking beer at his friend’s house in the afternoon before returning to what he thought was his room. 

The officer arrested him on charges of Minor In Possession — In Body. He handcuffed the resident and escorted him to the patrol car.

The male was transported to Pima County Jail and booked.
