Women’s basketball opens season with scrimmage

The Arizona women’s basketball team begins its 2008-2009 season with the program’s annual Red-Blue game in McKale Center at 7 p.m.

First-year head coach Niya Butts looks to lead a completely revamped roster after last season’s tumultuous finale .

The Wildcats finished last year with a record of 10-20 after a barrage of suspensions and transfers bogged down the team heading into the Pacific 10 Tournament. Ex-head coach Joan Bonvicini was fired at the conclusion of the season, finishing with an 287-223 overall record in Tucson.

“”I can’t wait to start practicing,”” Ify Ibekwe wrote in a blog on Arizona Athletics’ Web site. “”It’s very exciting to know that the season is right around the corner. The Red and Blue game is our first game as a team and we are all looking forward to that game because that’s where we find out how we look as a team.””
