To say that Arizona dominated Weber State on Friday would simply be an understatement. The Wildcats were hoping to start the season off right and they did exactly that, putting up six goals and shutting out Weber State 6-0. All of Arizona’s goals came in the first half, which was a program record for most goals in the first 45 minutes of a match.

The ‘Cats wasted no time getting on the board, as Arizona’s first goal of the season came from the freshman phenom Madison Goerlinger. She headed in afec corner kick from senior Morgan McGarry in the 2nd minute, making it the first goal of Goerlinger’s promising career.

The second goal was scored by junior forward Jada Talley in the 14th minute. Junior Hannah Clifford won the ball back and delivered a nice pass into the box to set up Talley to slam it home with her left foot.

Arizona’s most impactful substitution came in the 28th minute with sophomore Brooke Wilson. Wilson looked healthy, coming off an injury that forced her to miss the exhibition match against San Diego, scoring 2 goals off 4 shots. Her first was in the 35th minute as she was able to recover from her first shot on goal and tap in the rebound, putting UA up 4-0. Wilson’s second goal occurred in the 38th minute. It was a throw-in from Madison Goerlinger that senior Kelcey Cavarra was able to head towards Wilson to set up the sixth goal of the game.

Set pieces were certainly a focal point coming into this game, as Arizona was able to force 11 corners in this game and scored two goals from them. The Wildcats’ fifth goal resulted in one of those corners scored by Iliana Hocking in the 36th minute.

Redshirt freshman Kendyll Humphreys didn’t see much action in net after Weber State only put two shots on goal, but she did look solid when she was tested. She played the full 90 minutes and made a nice diving save to her right on a free kick in the 12th minute.

Arizona soccer will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, Sept. 1 against Tennessee Tech at 11 a.m.
