Gymcats to start season nationally ranked

The UA gymnastics team has been tabbed as the No. 18 squad in the nation during the preseason.

“”It’s nice and it shows people’s respect for our program,”” UA head coach Bill Ryden said in a press release. “”All we can do is try and live up to that ranking and exceed it.””

Arizona was one of five Pacific 10 Conference schools to be nationally ranked. UCLA was picked No. 4, along with Stanford (No. 5), Oregon State (No. 9) and ASU (No. 24).

The Wildcats, who are composed of four seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and six freshmen, enter the season with 23 straight postseason berths.

The preseason rank, however, isn’t something the athletes are focusing on.

“”The girls really don’t look at the rankings,”” Ryden said. “”It’s more for the coaches and the media. Until we get about a month into the season, we wont really know how accurate (the rankings) are.””

The Wildcats team will flip into the 2009 season on the road against Minnesota on Saturday night at 6.
