Men’s golf in third place after 36 holes

The No. 50 Arizona men’s golf team had its best day of the season yesterday.

The Wildcats carded a 36-hole tally of 12-under 564 to finish the first two rounds of the CordeValle Collegiate in third place after shooting their two best individual rounds of the season.

The Wildcats are in good position to claim their best finish of the year, as only the final round remains today.

Arizona has yet to finish higher than 10th in any tournament this season.

Arizona’s score isn’t official yet, however; only six of the 17 teams finished the second round due to darkness. The remaining teams will finish it today before beginning the final round.

Junior Travis Esway is the Wildcats’ top player in the tournament, as he is currently tied for third place overall with a two-round total of 7-under 137.

Esway rocketed from 31st place to third after shooting a blistering 7-under 65 in the second round, good for Arizona’s low round of the year and his career low.

Senior Josh Esler is tied for 10th place with a 36-hole tally of 5-under 139.

Sophomore Ben Fox (2-under-142, tied 16th), junior Creighton Honeck (4-over-148, T65th) and senior Josh Wilks (5-over-149, T70th) round out the Arizona lineup.

No. 9 Stanford has the overall lead but has yet to finish the second round.

The Wildcats will tee off their final round of the fall season this morning at 9:30.

The tournament is being contested on the CordeValle Championship Tees in San Martin, Calif., a par 72, 7,119-yard course.
