    pastner’s notebook

In this edition of Pastner’s notebook, the Arizona men’s basketball assistant coach talks about incoming freshman Chase Budinger in the McDonald’s All-American game, instant messaging and his own plans for April.

Wildcat: What does April hold in store for you?

Pastner: “”The month of April really consists or recruiting and individual workouts with our players. Recruiting travels will take us all over the United States; wherever there is prospects we’ll be there. We’ll be all up and down the West Coast, all over Texas and anywhere else we need to go to make sure we’re on top of kids we need to be on top of.””

Wildcat: What’s a typical day during this month like for you?

Pastner: “”It depends. If it’s on the weekend, you’re at the tournaments, and it consists of constantly seeing games from 7 in the morning to midnight. You’re all over the place. And if it’s during the week, we have to be at different schools. It can only be a scholastic event during the month of April.””

Wildcat: How has instant messaging and text messaging changed recruiting?

Pastner: “”It’s changed recruiting because you can have instant contact with the individual right away to develop a relationship at a much earlier age. As of June 15th, after a prospect completes their sophomore year of high school, we as coaches are allowed to contact them via e-mail, text message, instant message and what that does is that it starts relationship at a young age … you’re developing relationships and the ability to form a trust bond so they know they can trust you and know what kind of person you are both as a coach and off the floor as well.””

Wildcat: What do you think about the ASU head coaching job search?

Pastner: “”I heard that Rick Majerus is not going to ASU. I’m sure they’re going to bring in a worthy candidate. If they brought in Rick Majerus, he would do a great job and I’m sure whoever they bring in will be a great candidate and great coach.””

Wildcat: What have you heard about Budinger from people at the McDonald’s All-American game?

Pastner: “”A lot of people we talked to said if it wasn’t for it wasn’t for the NBA draft rule, there’d be no way he’d be coming to college, he’d be a top 10 pick in the NBA draft.””

Wildcat: What did you think of him in the game?

Pastner: “”I thought Chase was great… great passing ability, shot it well, everything.””
