“M-tennis senior beats USC thorn, reaches main draw”

The momentum keeps rolling for Arizona tennis player Claudio Christen, as the senior survived another day at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

In yesterday’s third and final round of pre-qualifying play, Christen defeated USC’s Gary Sacks in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2, to reach today’s main draw.

UA head coach Tad Berkowitz sees Christen progressively gaining a higher confidence level, while also becoming more “”match tough,”” throughout the tournament.

“”At this level, we’re at the point where we have the elite top players in college tennis,”” Berkowitz said. “”At this stage, everyone’s tough and everyone’s good.””

Christen took care of business by earning early points in the second set and never letting up against a player with a 4-0 record against Arizona in match play dating back to last season, Berkowitz said.

“”For him to win, it was a nice accomplishment for him,”” he said.

Christen awaits first-round opponent Andy Juc of Furman today at 8 a.m. Berkowitz describes Juc as one of the nation’s top players, who qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships last spring.

Now that Christen’s reached this level, Berkowitz said he’s confident Christen will continue his streak.
