The Arizona baseball team fell to Ole Miss in the opening round of the Coral Gables Regional Saturday night.

Chase Davis and Garen Caulfield got the offense going for the Wildcats in the second inning with solo home runs. Arizona would hold a 2-0 lead through the first three frames.

Ole Miss got on the board in the fourth with a leadoff single followed by a home run given up by Garrett Irvin to tie the game at 2-2.

Tanner O’Tremba started a two-out rally in the sixth inning with a double to right field followed by an intentional walk to Chase Davis. Tony Bullard stepped to the plate and brought them both in to score with a double to right-center field to make it 4-2 Arizona.

Irvin would leave the game in the seventh inning after letting up a game-tying two-run homer to left field. He finished the night with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing four runs on eight hits.

Javyn Pimental would take the mound for Arizona in the eighth inning, and manager Chip Hale said post-game they went with the lefty to face off against the top of the Ole Miss order.

Pimental would walk his first two batters faced and be replaced by Trevor Long on the mound. A third walk in the inning by Arizona would load the bases for Ole Miss, and Peyton Chatagnier cleared them with a double down the left field line to make it a 7-4 ballgame.

“Left-handers are much better against him, and [Pimental] has been throwing the ball really well,” Hale said. “We felt like that was the right matchup, it didn’t work out.

Arizona batters would strike out 20 times on the night with 12 coming from Ole Miss starter Dylan DeLucia.

“He just threw strikes and commanded all those pitches well, and we didn’t execute when we needed to,” Tony Bullard said post-game.

The Wildcats will now face Canisius on Sunday in an elimination game with first pitch scheduled for 8:00 a.m. MST.
