Spring Fling is an exciting and fun time for many students. According to the ASUA website, there are “over 35 rides, games and, of course, the over 20 original food booths!” However, I do believe that, for some people, Spring Fling isn’t all fun and games. The tents and structures make getting around extremely difficult, especially if you come in through the Campbell entrance. I learned this the hard way, when the whole end of the Mall was closed off and some girl and I had to fight through trees and bushes to get to class on time. 

So, try to make alternative arrangements. If you normally enter school through Campbell, do it elsewhere. Not only will drop-offs be impossible, you won’t be able to get anywhere anyway. Also, be aware traffic will be a nightmare for those two days. Once again, try to find alternative routes. Most roads end up intersecting in Tucson, so this isn’t all that hard. At the very least, plan ahead, because you may end up stuck in traffic around the university.

Make sure you actually utilize the free parking the university has offered instead of paying for parking. There are lots south of Sixth Street and north of Speedway Boulevard. There is paid parking as well in the Cherry Avenue, Sixth Street and South Stadium parking lots, but the rest of the parking garages are free for the day. Did you hear that? I know the University has a horrible track record for notifying people of events and free things, but I am here to let you know there is free parking available in those lots and parking garages. Take advantage of them!

Another policy you need to be aware of is the prohibition of professional camera equipment unless you have a media badge. Don’t be that guy who is kicked out. The bag policy is strict as well, to prevent people like you from bringing in outside snacks it seems. It’s not a movie theater, but try the food anyways. It’s really amazing, from what I hear.

Overall, I would just say to have fun. Spring Fling is a great time and an amazing alternative to the Pima County Fair, which not everyone can make it to. After checking the Spring Fling official website, prices for admission and rides are very reasonable, so don’t be afraid to treat yourself. Spring Fling only comes once a year, and while the things above do suck, it’s only for three days. Everyone should go just to see what it is, and to try the food of course. 

Admission is free with a CatCard, so you’re really not losing anything by going to see what it is all about. For that reason alone, the pros outweigh the cons, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of them. $35 for the wristband isn’t a bad price, and you’ll probably get good use out of it. Bear Down and have fun! And, also, stay safe! Use the SafeRide service on campus if you need a ride home.
