The No. 25 Arizona men’s golf team limped across the finish line yesterday, shooting a final-round 3-over-par 287 to finish in 10th place at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
Arizona’s final-round score was its worst round of the tournament. The Wildcats’ total for all three rounds was 5-under 847.
Host Alabama, ranked No. 7, won the 56-hole tournament with an overall total of 33-under 818 followed by Texas Tech, who shot 26-under 825, and Texas, who finished at 23-under 828 .
Junior Travis Esway was the only Wildcat to finish the tournament under par, tallying a final-round score of 1-over 72 en route to a 1-under 212 total, good for a 27th-place tie.
Junior Trey Denton shot Arizona’s low round of the final day, shooting a 1-under 70, and finished the tournament with a score of 1-over 214 and a tie for 35th place.
Freshman Pedro Oriol finished tied for 42nd with a 3-over 216, redshirt senior Nathan Tyler tied for 54th with a 10-over 223 and sophomore Ben Fox shot a 13-over 226.
Alabama’s Joseph Sykora shot an impressive 199 (-14) and took home the individual title. He finished two strokes ahead of Mark Haastrup from Georgia State and Will Griffin of Texas.
The team took an early evening flight home and was not available for comment.
Arizona will play again Oct. 22-24 in the Isleworth Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
