M-tennis’ Christen works toward consistency in weekend tourney

After an impressive run through last week’s grand slam tournament, senior Claudio Christen hopes to maintain the same level and continue his momentum at this weekend’s Midland Collegiate Tournament in Midland, Texas.

Christen joins teammate Bruno Alcala one week after posting an impressive 4-1 record through upsets at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.

Christen defeated Gary Sacks of USC in qualifying 6-4, 6-2 last Wednesday, before moving on to beat No. 45-ranked Andy Juc of Furman 6-3, 6-1. Christen withdrew his second round match to No. 12-ranked Adam Holmstrom from Denver due to a sickness.

“”Now we’d like to see him continue it and stay on that track,”” said UA head coach Tad Berkowitz. “”I’d love to see him maintain that level and same intensity last weekend.””

Berkowitz added that Christen’s play is much improved from last year, all the way to the peak of his game at Arizona. Like all fall tournaments, Berkowitz aims for progression through match play experience.

“”I think this tournament is no different from the others in a sense of going out there, getting some good wins in and continuing the momentum,”” Berkowitz said.
