Track to participate in ‘competitive training meet this weekend’

While most of the national track and field focus will be up North at the Arizona State Invitational this weekend, the majority of the UA men’s and women’s track and field teams will be competing in their own event at Roy P. Drachman Stadium tomorrow.

This weekend’s Arizona International Meet is designed to give UA athletes a week off from the larger competitions as they prepare for next weekend’s Jim Click Shootout, one of the premier outdoor events on the collegiate track and field circuit all year.

The Arizona International will consist mainly of UA athletes and athletes from club teams from across the state of Arizona.

UA head coach Fred Harvey insisted, however, this will not be an easy weekend for his athletes, and he still expects them to post quality marks while also viewing the week as a “”competitive training session.””

“”They’re going to compete but it’s going to be more of a training environment, if you will,”” Harvey said. “”But I’m not going to allow them to go into this meet with the attitude that it’s just a training situation and they can just float.””

Harvey hopes to instill a mentality in the athletes that they need to go out and compete no matter if they are tired or if it’s a training situation. This follows along the team’s goals heading into the outdoor season, which included increasing its intensity after a bittersweet indoor season.

“”I think the team’s (mentality) has changed in a good way since the outdoor season started,”” said thrower Megan Howard.

While the field athletes and sprinters will remain in Tucson, Harvey said he is sending his distance runners to ASU in order to give them a better field to compete against.

The rest of the UA team will kick off its competition tomorrow morning with the throwing events at 10 a.m., followed by the jumping events at 11:30 a.m. and the running events at 12:30 p.m.
