“Pickup strikes and critically injures Modesto girl, 12, on bicycle”

A pickup truck struck a 12-year-old girl on a bicycle as she crossed a busy intersection this evening, and the child was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

Sgt. Brian Findlen said the girl and a family member were riding bicycles northbound on Carver Road about 5:45 p.m. when the 12-year-old was struck by a Chevrolet S-10 pickup heading westbound on Briggsmore Avenue.

The girl was thrown from her bike and landed in the street, unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse, Findlen said. Two nurses who were passing by stopped to administer first aid and CPR, he said.

The girl, who suffered head trauma, revived and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

“”We’re hopeful that she will survive,”” Findlen said.

Investigators don’t believe the girl was wearing a helmet.

The pickup driver, Daniel Covarrubias, 25, of Turlock, was cooperating with investigators, Findlen said. Covarrubias was not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Findlen said investigators, who worked at the intersection well past sundown, were trying to determine whether the cyclists or the pickup driver ran a red light.

No citations had been issued, he said.

He expected that Briggsmore, which was closed from Tully Road westbound after the accident, would reopen about 9:30 p.m.
