Vandals tag homes and vehicles in Belleville area neighborhood

Vehicles, fences and garage doors in the Weatherstone subdivision were tagged Monday with graffiti that have left investigators and residents puzzled at their exact meanings.

Most of the targets in the neighborhood adjacent to Southwestern Illinois College had “”62 Brim”” spray-painted in black on them, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Johnson said.

“”The tagging doesn’t strike a bell with most of us,”” Sgt. Michael Hundelt said.

Some residents speculated that it was a gang sign, Johnson said. But there have been no indications that a gang has moved into the neighborhood, and there haven’t been any gang problems there in the past, he said.

If one enters the tag in a Google search on the Internet, a number of gang-related sites do appear.

“”I was glad it was nothing obscene that I know of,”” said Kristine Mueller, a 429 Weatherstone Drive resident whose garage door and van were vandalized. “”I really don’t want to know (what it means).””

Mueller said the vandals must have struck sometime between 6:50 and about 8:30 p.m. Her neighbors told her about it.

“”We were just shocked,”” she said.

Three properties were also hit in the 500 block of Windrift Drive and two in the 500 block of Millstone Drive.

No suspects have been identified and no witnesses have come forward who saw the vandal or vandals in the act, Johnson said.
