Since the March release of its second full-length album Morkkis, local act Dream Sick has amassed a following at its live shows, made up of folks from all over Tucson.
With three years under its belt and a third album on the way, the band is finally hitting the road outside of Arizona this week. As drummer Matt Baquet said, “We have known that we need to leave Arizona to play shows for some time now, at least to take a step forward as a band.”
For a band that can be found playing in downtown Tucson on any given week, only with the release of Morkkis had Dream Sick begun to have merchandise like CDs and tapes to show for its hard work.
It was this progression in the band’s business that Baquet ultimately credits with driving the band to venture forth this summer.
“We finally have merch to sell, we finally all have the same weekend off,” he said. “It just seemed like the right thing to do.”
In addition to its first out-of-state tour, Baquet sheds light on the recording of his band’s third album.
“We decided to record sooner than later and were able to squeeze into Waterworks Studios three weeks ago for a quick session,” Baquet said. “We got started on a handful of new songs that we plan on working on for the rest of the summer.”
Only a month ago, Dream Sick played its last show before taking a summer break to work on the album. With the impending California shows, though, the band’s ever-impressive work ethic promises that Dream Sick concerts in the future will include an even tighter and more varied set of songs than ever before.
The tour kickoff show, which is with Brooklyn based band TEEN at Club Congress tonight, will officially set the band in motion toward its small weekend tour in Southern California. In addition to a show at The Void in San Diego, Dream Sick is scheduled to play both the esteemed Burger Records building and a house show in Fullerton.
“It’s only a weekend in Southern California but we are very excited,” Baquet said. “We love house shows.”
The show at Congress is free and 21 and up.
