The University of Arizona women’s swim and dive team kicked off the New Year in Tucson by competing against the NAU Lumberjacks at Hillenbrand Aquatics Center on Friday, Jan. 3. The Wildcats finished 82 points ahead of the Lumberjacks with a final score of 162.5 compared to NAU’s 80.5.
During the single-day competition, Arizona was dominant, capturing first place in 10 of the 13 total events. The Wildcats secured multiple top finishes in both individual and relay events, showcasing their strength and versatility.
Arizona swept the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle events. The 50y was captured by Lexi Duchsherer (23.27), Riley Botton (23.36) and Julia Urbanowski (24.19).
Botton also placed third in the 100y with a time of 51.46, following second-place finisher Julia Wozniak (51.37) and first-place finisher Alyssa Schwengel (50.43).
Schwengel, along with Wozniak, Duchsherer and Botton, took first in the 200y freestyle relay, with a time of 1:32.09. Schwengel also contributed to Arizona’s first-place finish in the 400 medley relay alongside Paige Armstrong, Maryam Sheikhalizadehkhangh and Eleni Gewalt, recording a time of 3:44.25.
Divers Zara Ayazi and Brooke Earley finished first and second, respectively, in the 1-meter dive, with scores of 286.73 and 265.20. Earley also placed third in the 3-meter dive, recording a score of 250.95, following second-place finisher Maria Colombo.
Looking ahead
The Wildcat men face Harvard University on Friday, Jan. 10 at Hillenbrand Aquatics Center. The entire squad, men and women, are back in action against the University of Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. The matchup against the Gophers marks the Wildcats’ last home meet for the rest of the season.
