No. 21 Arizona gymnastics secures victory over Air Force in home opener

The No. 21 Arizona Gymnastics team won their home opener against the Air Force Academy in McKale Center on Jan. 17, sporting the team’s new sparkling red leotards and scoring a 196.100. The Falcons posted a final score of 193.450. 

Freshman Aubrey Krohnfeldt was awarded Gymnast of the Meet following her floor routine that scoured a 9.925. 

Vault 

Arizona started the night on vault and recorded a 48.825. Sophomore Abigayle Martin posted a strong 9.775. Senior Alysen Fears led the Wildcats in this rotation, posting a 9.850. 

Uneven bars 

The GymCats posted a 49.050 in the second rotation of the night. Starting off the rotation on a high note, Martin posted a 9.825 on bars. Fifth-year Elena Deets tied her career high of 9.90. Last week, Deets was named the Big 12 Gymnastics Specialist of the Week. Fears completed the rotation with a 9.850. 

Balance beam 

The GymCats scored a 48.850 on the balance beam. Junior Gianna Lenczner and senior Emily Mueller set the tone for the rotation, earning back-to-back 9.825s.

Floor exercise 

Closing out the night on the floor, Arizona scored a 49.375, sealing the Wildcats’ victory. Krohnfeldt and Emma Strom both achieved season highs scoring 9.925s. Martin and Mueller maintained the momentum scoring 9.875s. 

Up next 

The GymCats will travel to Tempe to face ASU on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. in Desert Financial Arena.
