The University of Arizona women’s tennis team (8-4) bounced back with two straight victories over Colorado State University (1-7) and the University at Buffalo (8-1) on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats would secure a dominant 4-1 victory over the Rams. While later, Arizona would rout the Buffaloes 7-0.
Game 1: Arizona vs Colorado State University – 10 a.m.
Arizona would open the weekend with a commanding 4-1 victory over Colorado State on Friday, winning three of four completed singles matches and sweeping doubles play.
The Wildcats displayed their dominance early. On court 2, Arizona’s Zoya Chulak and Karissa Ghigiarelli took down CSU’s Mariya Dobreva and Logan Voeks, 6-1. Belen Nevenhoven and Josie Usereau secured the doubles point with a victory over Victor Erechtchenko and Sarah Weekley, 6-2 on court one.
In singles competition, Colorado State would open looking to level the score early. CSU’s Diana Lizarazo would capture the first singles win on court 6 over Arizona’s Ghigiarelli.
This tie would last long as Arizona would capture three straight court victories starting with Danielle Tuhten winning court 3 6-4, 6-2 over CSU’s Viktor Zhadzinskaya.
Next came a back-and-forth battle at court 4, with Arizona’s Tanvi Narendran edging out CSU’s Voeks 7-6 in the first set. However, Narendran would pull away finishing the second set 6-1, grabbing another crucial point for the Wildcats.
Midori Castillo-Meza would seal the Arizona victory with a commanding 7-5, 6-0 win over Erechtchenko on court 2.
Game 2: Arizona vs the University at Buffalo – 2 p.m.
The Wildcats would continue to control the doubles point, securing it yet again with two straight wins on courts 1 and 2. The duo of Castillo-Meza and Martyna Ostrzygalo would show dominance on court 1 fast, winning 6-0 over Buffalo’s Esmee Andresen and Maria Glowacka. Wildcats Teja Tirunelveli and Chulak captured the point with a 6-3 victory over Marta Giglio and Jagmeet Kaur on court 2.
Singles matches would prove Arizona’s control once again as they would win out on all six courts. Castillo-Meza would be the first winning Wildcat swiftly beating Glowacka 6-0, 6-1 on court 2.
Narendran, Tuhten, Ostrzygalo, and Stephanie Shogreen would win out their courts on order, cementing the Arizona rout.
Ghigiarelli would ice the win with a 6-2, 7-6, 10-7 victory over UB’s Liv Roestel on court 6.
Looking Ahead
The Wildcats’ next matchup comes as they host No. 38 BYU on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Wildcats are currently 2-2 against ranked opponents and 1-2 against top-25 teams. The Wildcats and Cougars met just last season in Jan. 2024, where the Cougars would beat Arizona at home 4-1.
