Relying on doctors is something that all of us have done at least once. For women, they often depend on specialists to address their specific health needs. UA Campus Health serves female and transgender students regardless of insurance status!
Within the Campus Health Department, which provides a wide variety of treatments and services to UA students, there is the Women’s and LGBTQ+ Health Services department, specializing in providing resources to women and non-binary individuals.
They offer many different services that other health offices may not, such as routine exams, prescription writing, consultation services, STI testing and much more. They even provide emergency contraception and referrals in the case of pregnancy.
The best part is, you do not need to have an insurance provider to make an appointment or receive Campus Health services. Although they send costs through the bursar’s account for students, you can access these resources regardless of your insurance status.
David Salafsky is the executive director of Campus Health. “About half of students use Campus Health historically, any given year,” Salafsky said. “A few years back, Women’s Health expanded services to U of A employees, in addition to students.”
Salafsky is confident in the appreciation that women at UA have for the health services. “I know many employees value the high-quality care and the convenience of receiving their health care on campus,” Salafsky said.
“Most outreach at Campus Health goes through our Health Promotion team,” Salafsky said. “But I know Women’s Health participates in a number of outreach events during the year, including our most recent SexTalk Resource Fair, which took place on the Mall last month.”
The resource fair took place over five days in February and featured audience Q&A, support groups and other free resources. Next month, Campus Health plans to host the “Get Tested” event and resource fair, which will include similar events to those held at the last fair.
The Women’s and LGBTQ+ Services department does more than provide care for women. According to their website, the department also offers a range of services for members of the transgender community, including support services, hormonal therapy and referrals for surgical transition. Their commitment to high-quality, gender-affirming care is what sets them apart from more traditional care clinics.
