Sports brief: ex-‘Cat Williams called up to NBA

Former UA men’s basketball player Marcus Williams has signed with the San Antonio Spurs, the team announced Wednesday.

The 6-foot-7 forward played in 45 games – all starts – this season with the Austin Toros, an NBA Development League team. He averaged 23 points – second-best in the D-League – 7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

After he left the UA following his sophomore year, Williams was selected by the Spurs in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft and played in seven preseason games before being waived in October of 2007. He had two previous call-ups with the Spurs and Clippers. He has now played in 13 career NBA games, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 boards.

In two seasons with the Wildcats, Williams averaged 14.7 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game.
