With just weeks before classes begin, our Wildcat habitat is about to get even more wild. This edition of Police Beat will catch you up on the latest schemes and lewd behavior that the University of Arizona Police Department responded to over the summer, and what to look out for as we return to campus.
Man harasses UA custodian
A University of Arizona custodian reported that a suspect, not affiliated with the UA, was banging on windows and urinating on the ground on the south side of Likins Hall on June 21. Officers contacted the suspect on the south side of the building where he was arrested and charged.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had disturbed a female employee through a window. According to the case report, he, pantsless, stared into the employee’s eyes while he “manipulated” his genitalia.
He was arrested on a charge of indecent exposure and four confirmed misdemeanor warrants for criminal trespassing. He was also issued a 1-year exclusionary order for all UA property.
Student victimized by TikTok scammer
Between May 3-22, a UA student fell victim to fraud over the video-sharing app TikTok. According to the case report, an alleged woman messaged the victim on the platform, proposing that he join her in developing a bitcoin business.
The victim agreed, transferring a total of $62,903 to the woman through a crypto-based currency app over the course of two days. After the funds were transferred, the victim discovered that he could no longer contact the woman.
According to the case report, the UAPD officer assisted the victim in working with his bank to gather information for the case, and referred the victim to the FBI’s Investigative Services.
Indecent exposure
On June 14 at 6:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of indecent exposure at McClelland Park. According to the case report, the victim, whose affiliation with campus is unknown, told UAPD that at 6:00 p.m. she saw an individual near the palm trees by McClelland Park with his pants down, exposing his genitals.
The victim immediately left the area, but was able to describe the suspect to officers as a tall, thinly built, white man with blonde hair and blue eyes. The victim also reported that the suspect had a face tattoo and estimated that he was in his 30s.
Officers were unable to locate an individual who matched the perpetrator’s description on campus, and no camera footage was available in the area. Upon further investigation, officers noticed that the suspect matches the description of a known sex offender that was seen by officers off campus earlier that day.
According to the case report, the officers are collaborating with detectives and the reporting party to conduct further investigation, including a photo lineup.
Firearm stolen from woman’s vehicle
On June 10, a woman reported to UAPD that her 2016 Ford Mustang had been robbed sometime between 6:50 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. while it was parked on the first level of Tyndall Garage.
The victim reported that her handgun, a tan Glock 19, was missing, along with three empty ammo magazines and a black backpack containing personal hygiene items.
The case report indicated that the serial number of the weapon was obtained and documented.
