A 21-year-old female UA student was hit by a car yesterday at the Mountain Avenue and Speedway Boulevard intersection and pinned up against the Computer Center, according to Tucson Police officials.

At 9:46 a.m., a 2009 Toyota Corolla collided with a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier in the middle of the intersection, said Tucson Police Lt. Fabian Pacheco. The 2009 Toyota then rolled over and struck the pedestrian, who was up on the corner of the Computer Center.

The victim is in life-threatening condition and was taken to University Medical Center for surgery.

The drivers did not suffer injuries, but received assistance at the scene as they were “”shook up,”” Pacheco said.

The eastbound section of Speedway was shut down by police from Euclid Avenue to Mountain Avenue.

“”We’re still piecing this together,”” Pacheco said. The Toyota was traveling eastbound on Speedway, while the Chevrolet was waiting at the left turn on Speedway to go south on Mountain.

Economics junior Burke Lieppman was in his car waiting to go in the same direction as the Chevrolet when he witnessed the accident.

Lieppman said the Toyota “”ran the light and just smoked him (the Chevrolet) really, really hard.”” Tucson traffic detectives are still investigating whether that was the case, and who was at fault.

The student “”figured a pedestrian got hit,”” as there was a group near the bushes on the building. “”The guy came flying through,”” he said.

The victim’s condition remains unchanged. More details to follow as the investigation progresses.
