Arizona tops UTEP 72-51

Arizona was able to overcome turnover issues against UTEP, defeating the Miners 72-51 at McKale Center Thursday night.

The Wildcats committed 19 turnovers, but an 13-2 run that started with 6:13 remaining was all they needed.

It was an all-around effort for Arizona, as eight players finished with at least six points, including a game-high 17 points from point guard Mark Lyons.

Lyons, who struggled in the first half against Charleston Southern, burst out of the gates this time around. He scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, in the first half as Arizona went into intermission with a 13-point lead.

After a stellar first half, Arizona and Lyons struggled in the second half, at least at first.

The Wildcats jumped out of the gate and led by as much as 15 points on the heels of a stellar showing from beyond the arc, shooting 8-of-13 from 3-point range.

After bringing the lead to 17 points with 13:03 left in the game, turnovers helped the Miners chip away and bring the game to within eight points at the 7:48 mark in the second half.

The Wildcats shot just 1-of-5 from three in the second half, and Lyons had just six points on 1-of-3 shooting in the half.

On the heels of eight points in six minutes from Ashley, though, Arizona was able to jump back to the game-ending 21-point lead.

Ashley scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, contributing to the Wildcats 35-15 rebounding advantage. Freshmen big men Kaleb Tarczewski and Grant Jerrett added six and seven rebounds, respectively.
